We Cater to Fearful Patients
At Kocher and Kocher Dentistry, we understand that visiting the dentist can be a source of anxiety for many. We’ve built a reputation for providing a calm, understanding, and gentle environment especially for our fearful patients. Your comfort and peace of mind are our top priorities.
Understanding Dental Fear and Anxiety
Dental fear is incredibly common, and you’re not alone if you feel anxious about dental visits. Many factors can contribute to this apprehension:
- Past Traumatic Experiences: A previous painful or uncomfortable dental visit can leave a lasting negative impression.
- Fear of Pain: The anticipation of pain, even if minor, can be a significant deterrent.
- Loss of Control: Lying back in the dental chair can make some feel vulnerable and out of control.
- Embarrassment or Shame: Concerns about the condition of one’s teeth or bad breath can lead to self-consciousness.
- Fear of Needles or Drilling: The sight or sound of dental instruments can trigger strong reactions.
- Anxiety Disorders: Underlying generalized anxiety or panic disorders can amplify dental fears.
No matter the reason, we are here to listen, understand, and help you overcome these anxieties.
Our Gentle Approach: Calming Chairside Techniques
We focus on creating a supportive environment and employing a variety of non-pharmaceutical techniques to help you feel at ease:
- Listen First: We start by listening to your concerns, fears, and past experiences. Understanding your specific anxieties helps us tailor your care.
- Clear Communication: We explain every step of your procedure clearly and answer all your questions. There are no surprises here.
- “Stop” Signal: You are always in control. We establish a clear “stop” signal (like raising your hand) that lets us know immediately if you need a break or feel uncomfortable.
- Relaxation Techniques: We can guide you through deep breathing exercises or provide a calming atmosphere with soothing music.
- Calming Environment: Our office is designed to feel welcoming and relaxing, not clinical.
- Gentle Chairside Demeanor: Our entire team is trained to provide care with the utmost patience, empathy, and a gentle touch. We work at your pace, ensuring you feel respected and comfortable throughout your visit.
Additional Comfort: Medication and Nitrous Oxide
For those procedures that are more involved, or if your anxiety is particularly high, we offer additional options to ensure your comfort:
- Prescribed Oral Medication: When necessary, we can prescribe a mild oral sedative to take before your appointment. This medication helps you relax and reduces anxiety, allowing for a more comfortable experience during more involved procedures.
- Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative that helps you relax quickly during your treatment. It’s administered through a small mask placed over your nose, and its effects wear off rapidly once the mask is removed, allowing you to drive yourself home afterward.
We’ll discuss these options with you thoroughly to determine the best approach for your individual needs.
